Darth Vader Comic May Explain Why Luke Went Into Hiding

Shedding light on The Last Jedi?

The latest issue of Marvel's new Darth Vader comic may offer an explanation as to why Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) went into exile, as seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Warning: Darth Vader #2 and potential The Last Jedi spoilers follow.

As reported by ComicBook.com, Star Wars: Darth Vader #2 (read IGN's review) includes a panel where Vader explains why the Jedi who survived the Great Jedi Purge didn't come to the aid of those in trouble, saying it was because of the Barash Vow.

"Any Jedi pursuing Barash has sworn to refrain from activities related to the order. Complete disengagement from anything but the Force. It is a type of penance," Vader says in the comic. "While a Barash-take would have felt the Purge, they would have not have allowed themselves to respond to it, or take action of any kind."

It appears the Barash Vow is a test the Jedi put themselves through. Given Skywalker's failed attempt to reestablish the Jedi Order, which resulted in Ben Solo turning to the dark side, killing his fellow Padawans and becoming Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), it's possible Luke then decided to go into exile and undertake the Barash Vow as penance for his failure.

If this indeed is part of the explanation for why Luke goes into hiding, we'll likely hear more about the Barash Vow in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens in theaters on December 15. For more on the upcoming film, find out why Driver refused to hang out with Hamill while making The Last Jedi.
