Mitsuki reveals all in this week’s episode of Ghost Hunters: Konoha.
Warning: The following review has full spoilers for the episode.
At first this week’s episode of Boruto appears to be yet another filler fest, but ends with a glimmer of hope for next week’s episode. This Mitsuki-focused story spends most of its time on some lazy character building, but wraps up with an answer to one of the show’s most pressing questions: who is behind the ghost incidents?
Mitsuki spends most of the episode trying to understand Boruto. He watches Boruto help Denki with a ninja mission, watches Boruto help Iwabe on his math, even insists on joining Naruto’s family for dinner so he can learn about his family life. This series of events takes up most of the episode, and while it does offer some setup for Mitsuki’s later actions, it is mind-numbingly typical (borderline humorous) to see Boruto helping his classmates while Mitsuki nods approvingly from afar.
By the end, we learn that Mitsuki’s interest in Boruto was all a part of his personal investigation into the incidents. Once he decides he can trust Boruto with the results of his research, he reveals he knows the identity of the perpetrator. The show cuts off right before he names the person, but we can infer from the final shot he has deduced that it is Sumire, the class rep. After patiently waiting five or so episodes for some any plot reveal, it feels nice to have a vague answer, and hopefully a deeper explanation is coming within the next few episodes. Of course, this last minute reveal can’t completely salvage an otherwise slow episode, but I for one am just thankful they didn’t hold off another week.
Plot revelations aside, the detail I will be thinking about the most from this week’s episode is the strange interactions between Naruto and Mitsuki. It is quickly apparent that Mitsuki has an interest in The Hokage, as well as great respect for his skills as a ninja. Given that Mitsuki is the son of Orochimaru it is no surprise he has an interest in Naruto. Naruto himself seems to sense something strange about Mitsuki during their short encounter, though it isn’t clear if he is aware of Mitsuki’s background. Even if he spends most of his time in the shadows, Mitsuki has quickly become one of Boruto’s most interesting characters, and I am glad the writers chose him to take on a more major role. I can’t wait to see if he is destined to be one of Boruto’s allies, or a future foe.
I feel like I’ve said this too many times over the course of these twelve episodes, but it finally feels like we are getting somewhere. It has been a long road but the identity of the ninja behind the ghost incidents has been all but revealed, and we appear to be all set up for an explosive encounter next week. The episode all this information is delivered via an episode that is a bit of a slog, but ends on a hopeful note that left me looking forward to the next episode for the first time in a long time.
The Verdict
After a lengthy tour of his boring school life, Mitsuki solves the ghost mystery on his own, while simultaneously deepening our suspicions about his personal goals. The show continues to hold the major details close to its chest, the identity reveal at least gives us something to think about while we wait for more.
