Warning: this article contains spoilers for Batman #24!

Batman just did the last thing we'd expect in his latest confrontation with Catwoman. He asked her to marry him.

The twist was revealed by USA Today ahead of Batman #24's June 7 release. This proposal comes as the duo are enjoying one of their nightly rooftop jaunts. Selina is caught off-guard when Bruce unmasks, gets on one knee and proposes using the very same diamond ring she stole from him in their very first encounter.

This twist builds on recent drama in Batman's world, including the apparent death of Red Robin Tim Drake in Detective Comics #940 and Bruce's short-lived reunion with his father in Batman #22, an encounter that ended with Thomas Wayne begging his son to give up being Batman.

In light of that drama, writer Tom King told USA Today that readers shouldn't necessarily view this as a positive step forward for Batman. “Was this a moment of vulnerability or a moment of arrogance? That’s almost the cliffhanger,” King said. “Is Batman making the greatest decision of his life or the greatest mistake?”

Readers won't immediately learn whether Batman and Catwoman are actually headed to the altar. King revealed that this twist feeds directly into Batman #25 and the upcoming "War of Jokes and Riddles" storyline. “It’s like, ‘You think you know me, but you don’t know me until this,’ ” King told USA Today. “The actual answer will come after he reveals something he’s never revealed to anyone, and she has to decide whether that’s good or bad.”

Beliueve it or not, there is some precedent for Batman and Catwoman gettiung married in the comics. That's what happens on the alternate world Earth-2. Earth-2's Huntress is the daughter of Bruce and Selina Wayne, and she carries on her parents' crusade after their deaths.
