New set images from Avengers: Infinity War appear to show a major change for Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity.
What follows could be considered spoilers for the upcoming film and, possibly, Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is your final warning!
In set images published by Variety, Robert Downey Jr.'s character appears to have a new chest-set Arc reactor incorporated into his costume.
Within the MCU timeline, Stark was able to remove the Arc reactor - which kept shrapnel from entering his heart - at the end of Iron Man 3, and was able to power his Iron Man suits without it in Captain America: Civil War.
The rumour that he'd have anew reactor for Infinity War began last week, when a photo tweeted by Downey appeared to show an arc-sized hole cut out of his T-shirt:
It begs the question - why would Stark re-implant an Arc reactor? Some have speculated that he'll sustain a new injury in the course of his appearance during Spider-man: Homecoming. In a wilder theory, others have guessed that antagonist Thanos will use the Dr. Strange's Time Stone to alter history and ensure Stark is still injured.
It may also be that his new reactor is, in fact, one of the Infinity Stones itself. The set image appears to show a blue glow from the reactor - could this be the Space Stone, currently lodged inside the Tesseract? If so, it will need to travel from Odin's Vault in Asgard into Stark's ribcage somehow - which is probably easier than it sounds in the MCU.
The new set images themselves don't offer a great deal more clues about the third Avengers movie - we see Stark, Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Wong (Benedict Wong) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) on a ruined city street.
Hopefully we'll find out a bit more before the The Avengers: Infinity War arrives on May 4, 2018.
