Bates Motel

This adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (and the original novel source material by Robert Bloch) is headlined by standout performances from Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga as, respectively, Norman and Norma Bates - a son and mother suffering through a crisis of co-dependancy and mutual denial. Bodies pile up as Norma refuses to get Norman the psychological care he needs for fear of him being taken away from her - all of it leading towards a tragic yet inevitable finish.

Available on: Netflix (Season 1-4) and for purchase on Amazon and iTunes.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

This game-changing dramedy from Joss Whedon features ghosts, ghouls, vampires, demons and a clever teenage girl (Sarah Michelle Gellar) battling to balance her high school life with her nocturnal activities as a badass monster hunter of exalted prophecy. It's one of the best shows ever... seriously.

Available on: Hulu and for purchase on iTunes and Amazon.

The Returned

This formidable and freaky French series (not the American remake that lasted one season on A&E) focuses on an isolated mountain town where the dead begin to reappear, looking for those they left behind. Meanwhile, mysterious phenomena occur while families try to adjust to the shock of seeing their formerly-dead loved ones again.

Available on: Netflix and for purchase on iTunes and Amazon.

Penny Dreadful

A gorgeously gory series filled with poetry and poignancy, Penny Dreadful, from Skyfall writer John Logan, whisks you back to Victorian era London snd into the tormented lives of an ensemble featuring classic literary characters such as Victor Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Gray, Dracula, and more. It's all led by an incredible performance from Eva Green, as the woman at the center of it all.

Fans of Black Mirror should check out creator/writer Charlie Brooker's earlier series, Dead Set - a sadistic skewering of Big Brother-style reality TV that features a cast of housemates, being filmed 24/7, while a zombie apocalypse unfolds around them, making their compound one of the only safe havens around.

Available on: Netflix

Supernatural

If you're in the mood for a long haul binge, then hop inside the Winchester brothers' '67 Chevy Impala, crank up the classic rock, and ride along with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) as they battle everything from vampires and werewolves to angels and demons. Make it far enough and you'll get to Lucifer and, yes, even God himself. We wish we could tell you this one had a great ending but... the series is still rolling! Season 13 is on the way and there's no sign of the show stopping.

Available on: Netflix and for purchase on iTunes and Amazon.

Bryan Fuller's artfully crafted and immensely evocative adaptation of the Thomas Harris Hannibal Lecter novels -- which inspired some hugely successful films -- stars Mads Mikkelsen as the famously famished Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Hugh Dancy as the mentally adept, but dangerously fragile, FBI profiler, Will Graham. Will gets lured into the doctor's diabolical world of deviant dining, in a series that both pays tribute to the source material and expands upon it in many bold, effective ways.

Available on: Amazon Prime and for purchase on iTunes and Amazon.
