New Evil Within 2 Crafting Details Revealed

The sequel shakes up crafting systems from the original.

A Bethesda blog post has revealed new crafting details in the Evil Within 2.

“The world of The Evil Within 2 is full of possibilities,” said Game Director John Johanas in the update. “With some of the larger stages we’ve created, we’re opening Union up to the players’ wishes and unique playstyles. Through the layout of the world, as well as the crafting and customization systems in the game, we’re providing you with the freedom to take on the challenges in front of you however you choose.”

Customizing Sebastian and your gear will now have separate systems. Green gel is still used to upgrade Sebastian, but weapons will now be upgraded with Weapon Parts.

Customization for Sebastian can be broken down into five categories: Health, Stealth, Combat, Rocvery, and Athleticism. Upgrades within these skill trees are numerous, but include recovering more health from healing items, reducing reticle sway when firing weapons, and the chance to automatically use a Medical Syringe when taking fatal damage.

You'll also be able to unlock special abilities in The Evil Within 2, such as Bullet Cascade, which temporarily increases damage with each shot. These powerful active upgrades will cost a great deal of Green Gel, however, so you must choose wisely when weighing them up against your passive upgrades.

Weapon customization follows the standard route for a survival horror, and you'll be able to tweak your firepower, ammo capacity, reload time and fire rate. However, the Warden Crossbow - with its variety of useful bolts - can be tweaked to change the parameters on the bolts themselves, depending on what kind of bolt effect you favour.

Elsewhere, there's a new focus on crafting ammunition and healing supplies in The Evil Within 2.

“Our crafting system lets you craft ammunition for the weapons that you like,” said Johanas. “You don’t have to rely solely on what you can scrounge up in the world. Again, it’s that emphasis on letting people play how they want to play. But it all comes back around to how much you explore and how many resources you can track down.”

This means resource scavenging. The items you'll find scattered around the world can be forged into ammo and first aid on a workbench, which can be found either in a safehouse or on its own in Union. Ammo is scarce throughout the world of The Evil Within 2 so crafting is essential, and although you can craft on the fly if you must, it will cost more resources.

“You can customize your experience to prepare yourself for what’s waiting for you, but there’s danger around every corner in Union,” said Johanas.  And key to that danger is the fact that you don’t know what’s lurking around the next corner. “Horror, for me, is always about the sense of mystery you feel, and how you can never fully grasp what’s going on."

The Evil Within 2 was revealed at E3, and will once again focus on original protagonist Sebastian, however this time he'll be searching for his daughter in its house of horrors.
