Black Panther Will Feature a Flashback to the '90s

The film will show T'Challa commuting to school.

The upcoming Black Panther solo film will reportedly feature a flashback to the 1990s.

According to East Bay Times, one of the San Francisco Bay Area's public transit systems, AC Transit, has approved the use of a 1990s-era logo for Black Panther. This will be part of a scene showing where and how T'Challa came to be. It will establish the character's origins, with T'Challa using the AC Transit to commute to school.

"In one scene, the film’s protagonist has a flashback to 1990, while he was a student at Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley," reads East Bay Times description. "And of course, he’s a daily AC Transit commuter. Cue the 1990s-era bus for the appropriate establishing shot."

In the comics, T'Challa does get his education in European and American schools, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Physics from Oxford University. Other than this supposed flashback scene, Black Panther's story largely remains a mystery. The only major plot detail that's known is T'Challa, with the help from the CIA and Dora Milaje, battling two foes who are threatening the hero's leadership.

The People v. OJ Simpson actor Sterling K. Brown recently signed on to play N'Jobu, "a figure from T'Challa aka Black Panther's past." The rest of the star-studded cast includes Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan, Winston Duke, and Lupita Nyong'o.

Black Panther hits theaters February 16, 2018.
