Game of Thrones Author Releasing New Anthology Story

The anthology is slated to be released on October 10th.

Expect a new Game of Thrones story written by George R.R. Martin to be released in 2017, even if it's not The Winds of Winter.

An Amazon listing for a new anthology collection called Book of Swords, from editor Gardner Dozois, teases "15 original tales celebrating fantasy’s golden age of sword and sorcery, including a new story from George R. R. Martin set in the world of A Game of Thrones!" The anthology is slated to be released on October 10th.

Martin has written several short stories set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, including the three Dunk and Egg novellas, and the novellas The Princess and the Queen and The Rogue Prince. Via Vulture, fans are speculating this new story might be a published version of "The Sons of the Dragon," a tale featuring Aenys and Maegor Targaryen that Martin has read at fan conventions.

There has been no announced release date for the sixth A Song of Ice and Fire novel, The Winds of Winter, Martin recently told a fan on his LiveJournal blog that "I think it will be out this year. (But hey, I thought the same thing last year)." He said he's "not done yet, but I've made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now."

Fans also are awaiting a long-discussed fourth Dunk and Egg novella. After the release of The Winds of Winter, Martin also plans to write the seventh and final ASoIaF book, A Dream of Spring.

Game of Thrones: Season 7 will have a delayed release in 2017, coming out in summer instead of its typical spring premiere. Recently star Iain Glen teased that the "size and scale" of Game of Thrones will increase in the seven-episode season. Season 8 is slated to be the final season of the show, but HBO programming president Casey Blogs recently said the episode count is still in flux.

Terri Schwartz is Entertainment Editor at IGN and is doing her best to wait patiently for The Winds of Winter's eventual release. Talk to her on Twitter at @Terri_Schwartz.
