A spinoff of The Big Bang Theory is currently in development at Warner Bros. TV and CBS.
According to Variety, the potential series is a prequel that centers around a young Sheldon Cooper and his life growing up as a boy genius in Texas.
The project is said to be in the earliest stages of development, and "just at the script stage," per Variety. A script deal is expected to be signed soon, with The Big Bang Theory showrunner Steve Molaro penning the script. CBS and Warner Bros. TV have yet to officially comment.
Sheldon star Jim Parsons is on board as executive producer, alongside Molaro and Chuck Lorre. Bill Prady, co-creator and executive producer of the original series, is also likely to join as executive producer.
Still the biggest comedy on TV, The Big Bang Theory is currently in its tenth season with an eleventh likely to follow. As Variety notes, Big Bang is now a very expensive series, with the three core leads (Parsons, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco) each making $1 million an episode, so a Sheldon-centric prequel would be an opportunity to -- in theory -- make an enticing show for Big Bang fans at a much lower cost.
