George Takei has know for a while that Star Trek Beyond's Hikaru Sulu would be openly gay in the new film—and though he's happy there's a gay character in the film, he's not pro the decision.
Actor John Cho, who plays Sulu in Star Trek Beyond, revealed his character will have a husband and a daughter in the new film, making Sulu the first openly LGBTQ character in the series. It's intended as an homage to Takei, who publicly announced he was gay in 2005. Takei, however, doesn't see the gesture as that.
"I'm delighted that there's a gay character," Takei told The Hollywood Reporter. "Unfortunately, it's a twisting of Gene's creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it's really unfortunate." The prolific actor would have preferred writer Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin to respect creator Gene Roddenberry's vision for the character.
Both Cho and Lin reached out to Takei to discuss the decision, and both times, he encouraged them to change their direction.
"I said, 'This movie is going to be coming out on the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, the 50th anniversary of paying tribute to Gene Roddenberry, the man whose vision it was carried us through half a century," Takei said. "Honor him and create a new character. I urged them. [Lin] left me feeling that that was going to happen."
Takei is still interested in portraying Sulu in the future. "There's no reason why an ancient, wise Admiral Sulu can't appear [in the upcoming CBS Star Trek series]," Takei added. "That should be fun."
Star Trek Beyond is slated for release on July 22.
