Fallout 4 hit shelves more than two years ago, but with 6 DLC packs under its belt, the Commonwealth is still home to an abundance of awesome Easter Eggs and secrets. We’ve already shown you the secret UFO that’s a series staple, and we’ve already found all the Bobbleheads and silly Pipboy classic games, so we decided to dig a bit deeper and search for the more obscure secrets the game has to offer. Here are 11 things you probably didn’t know about Fallout 4.
According to an old urban legend, if you see a mushroom cloud from an Atomic bomb, you should extend your arm and stick your thumb up. If the blast is bigger than your thumb, you are probably within the radiation zone and should try to evacuate. While this has never been confirmed by Bethesda, the Pipboy’s outstretched thumb and closed left eye clearly have some foreboding implications. Our suggestion in the case of a nuclear strike? Just run. Or jump in a refrigerator. (We're kidding. Please don't do that.)
In the Far Harbor DLC for Fallout 4, there is a lake just north of The Nucleus. When swimming across the lake you will see two skeletons floating on a board. One of the skeletons is lying on a door while the other is in the water holding on to the edge. This is a pretty obvious reference to the famous floating scene from James Cameron’s Titanic. Also just like in the movie, there's clearly enough room on the door for two people to have fit at the end YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID, ROSE.
Across the street from the eastern end of Fallout 4's Boston Common bar is called the Prost Bar. "Prost" translated from German means "Cheers," the name of a television series set in a basement bar in Boston. If you head inside, you’ll find many baseball posters and cards, a reference to Sam Malone’s background as a baseball player. You’ll even find a skeleton wearing a mailman's uniform, an obvious call back to Cliff Clavin, a postman who frequented the bar and one of the show's most beloved characters.
After gaining Codsworth as a companion, you can then return to Vault 111. When approaching the cryo bay that holds your dead spouse, Codsworth will have a very emotional moment where he will express his condolences to you.
On the north eastern side of Nuka World, you’ll find a house in the destroyed town called Bradberton. Upon entering, turn to your right and you’ll see a sword sticking out from a pile of ashes, exactly like a bonfire from the popular series, Dark Souls. Just like in Dark Souls, where kindling the bonfire refills your health, kindling this fire will cause Stimpaks to fall from the ceiling. Removing the sword from the ash will reward you with even more Stimpaks.
When attempting to enter the Covenant, you’ll be told that you need to take the SAFE test, which is used to weed out undesirables. Press hard enough and they’ll reveal they’re talking about synths. Regardless, the test itself is almost a direct copy of the GOAT test. The GOAT test was taken by the young students of Fallout 3’s Vault 101, to help figure out what everyone's job in the vault would be.
When moving through Nuka Worlds Fun House, you eventually come to a room that has a spinning floor with a few ghouls. You’ll notice that there are several doors along the curved walls. One of the white doors will open to a familiar yet chilling scene. You’ll see a man and woman on either side of a crib, with a baby mannequin in the crib, an eery nod to the game's opening scene.
Just north of the Mahkra Fishpacking building, you can find one of six hidden bottles that have a message inside. The bottle’s message is titled “Difficult to Kill” and the text reads, “Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs.” This is a direct reference to the movie Die Hard where John McClane, a person who is himself difficult to kill, says this exact line while crawling through an air vent.
Just south of University Point, you’ll find a refrigerator amongst some enemies. When approaching the fridge, a voice will call out saying he has been in there since the bombs went off, over 200 years ago. This is a fun nod to the 4th Indiana Jones movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, where Indy jumps into a lead-lined refrigerator to survive a nuclear blast. Need another Indiana Jones reference? Look no further than Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas, where this exact Easter Egg was already done, this time with Indy’s trademark fedora placed on a skeleton while also in a fridge. That’s two Indiana Jones references for the price of one!
More Harrison Ford references! On the roof of the Mass Fusion Containment Shed you can find an homage to the final scene from 1982’s Blade Runner, where Harrison shares a final moment with a replicant.
In the Nuka World DLC, head over to Fizztop mountain. On the roof, you can find a tiny person who appears to be frozen in carbonite. And we all SHOULD know what that's from.
Fallout 4 is a big game. With a lot of characters that talk not only to you, but to each other. It should be no surprise that Fallout 4 has a lot of recorded dialogue - but would guess they recorded over 111,000 spoken lines of dialogue? 13,000 of these are spoken by the main character yourself. This means that the Fallout 4 book is longer than the entirety of the scripts for both Fallout 3 and TESV: Skyrim combined.
These were just a few of our favorite secrets about Fallout 4 - did you have some that we missed? Be sure to let us know in the comments below, or add them to our Fallout 4 wiki yourself!
