Star Wars: Episode IX is Getting a Rewrite

The film is still slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2019.

Lucasfilm has hired a new writer to pen Star Wars: Episode IX.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jack Thorne, who recently wrote the drama Wonder starring Julia Roberts and Jacob Tremblay, has been brought in to rewrite Episode IX's script.

Director Colin Trevorrow and his writing partner Derek Connolly wrote the most recent draft of the script. The pair were initially working off a treatment by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. It's not known just how extensive Thorne's rewrite will be.

Thorne is the creator and co-creator of a few TV shows, including The Fades and The Last Panthers. He's also the writer of the first episode of the upcoming sci-fi anthology series, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams.

Star Wars: Episode IX opens in theaters on May 24, 2019 while The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017. Johnson has already shot one scene for Episode IX, and Trevorrow has promised the film will handle Leia "with love and respect."
