Mario Odyssey Is The First Mario Game Rated Higher Than E

We just don't know why yet.

Granted, at an E10+ it's not as though we'll hear Mario chuckin' cusses, but Super Mario Odyssey is the first mainline Mario game to receive higher than an 'Everyone' rating from the ESRB.

As spotted by GoNintendo, Mario's next outing now has a listed rating - however, the ESRB hasn't yet published its detailed rundown of reasons for the game's rating, so we don't know what's going to freak out the under-10s.

While some Mario spin-offs have reached higher, every Mario platformer until now has been an E.

According the ESRB's ratings guide, an E10+ is likely to contain "more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and/or minimal suggestive themes" than your garden variety E.

Maybe Mario's new-found ability to possess and destroy those in his way was deemed just a tiny bit too much?

We'll likely find out a few weeks prior to the game's release on Nintendo Switch this October 27 (i.e. the best day for pop culture in 2017).
