Guardians Director on the Skrulls Joining the MCU

And the '90s thing he wants to see happen in Captain Marvel.

We learned at San Diego Comic-Con that the Captain Marvel movie would not only be set in the 1990s, but it would also feature the introduction of the alien civilization the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As it turns out, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was the first one to inform fans last year that Marvel Studios could use some of the Skrulls in their movies as part of a character-sharing arrangement with 20th Century Fox.

I chatted with Gunn yesterday at a press event for the upcoming home entertainment release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, during which time I asked him what he thought about the Skrulls finally joining the MCU.

"I'm unbelievably stoked on that. The Skrulls are some of my favorite characters," Gunn said.

He added, "I had others times that I wanted to use them that didn't work out for one reason or another and I can't wait to see their implementation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

I also asked Gunn what, if anything, from the '90s he would like to see used in Captain Marvel since it's going to be a period movie, to which Gunn quipped, "Yeah, little kids wearing their jeans on backwards would be nice to see."

For those too young to get that reference, Gunn is referring to the '90s kid hip hop duo known as Kris Kross who, well, wore their pants on backwards. See below.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits Digital HD and 4K Ultra HD on August 8 and 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on August 22. Captain Marvel -- directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers -- is slated for a release.
