Dragon Ball Super Episode 104 Review

Share.

Moving at the speed of light.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Universe 10 is gone, but the Tournament of Power must continue; this week we get to see Hit and Goku work together to take on the powerhouse that is Universe 11. Things start off rather slow, with long scenes and little dialogue. All that turns around in the second half of the episode as the action ramps up and Hit shows off why he’s one of the best warriors in Universe 6.

Unfortunately this episode begins rather slow. There are long pauses, slow transitions and a general lack of action on screen. It’s clear that the team behind Super was trying to build tension, but took things a bit too far. If these poorly paced moments had only happened once or twice, the issue wouldn’t have been so pronounced but over the course of several minutes it continued to happen. It started to feel as if they were just padding the episode. Setting the mood of a fight is important, but taking several minutes to do so and in a manner that’s wholly uninteresting is not an enjoyable way to go about it.

Pacing issues aside, Hit remains as interesting as ever. His character is so drastically different in fighting style and demeanor than everyone else, so he’s always enjoyable to watch. Super did a great job of showcasing him, starting with him getting beat down then slowly overcoming adversity to ultimately triumph by the end of the episode.

Up until now, Universe 11 had always come off as very heroic and goodly, but by the end of the episode, all of that is pushed aside as we start to see cracks forming in that perception. This can be seen at several points throughout the episode, but is most noticeable at the end with Toppo admitting that justice must be set aside in order for them to survive. It’s a surprising turn of events and has me more curious than ever to learn about who these mysterious Universe 11 warriors truly are, and if their brand of justice is as heroic as they make it out to be.

DBS104GokuIsRed

It wouldn’t be Dragon Ball if Goku didn’t find a way into the fight, and that’s just what he did. I found myself very conflicted over his appearance. He’s always fun to watch and this time was no exception as he broke out his red form of Super Saiyan God. Still, his inclusion felt forced. He appeared at just the right time as if he had been waiting for the moment when he could have instead been helping his own universe which still has several low powered warriors fighting for survival. On top of that, we saw the female saiyans of Universe 6 sitting on the sidelines watching. Even if their power level can’t match Goku, it would’ve been far more interesting for them to step up and try to help their ally instead of Goku deus ex machina-ing his way into the situation.

The Verdict

Episode 104’s good moments were bogged down by unfortunate pacing this week. At it’s core, it delivers a good story of Hit overcoming an impossibly fast opponent and using his enemies own strength against him. We also get some very subtle but interesting moments outlining the nature of Universe 11. However, the episode is brought down by a slow and meandering start and the strange inclusion of Goku where he wasn’t truly needed.
