Top 10 Global Box Office Opening Weekends of All Time

Every film on the list has released in the past decade.

Over the weekend, The Fate of the Furious raced out to the biggest global box office opening of all time, meaning Star Wars: The Force Awakens fell behind to second place.

The Fate of the Furious earned an estimated $532.5 million worldwide this past weekend. That means the eighth installment in the Fast franchise broke the two-year-old record by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which grossed $529 million over its opening weekend. The Fate of the Furious actually saw slower sales domestically — $100.2 million compared to Furious 7's $147.2 million — but the overseas market delivered a monstrous $432.3 million for the film.

Check out the top 10 global opening weekends of all time (numbers via Box Office Mojo).

Movie (Release Year)  Global Opening Weekend Domestic Overseas
The Fate of the Furious (2017) $532.5 million $100.2 million $432.3 million
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) $529 million $248 million $281 million
Jurassic World (2015) $525.5 million $208.8 million $316.7 million
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) $483.2 million $169.2 million $314 million
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) $422.5 million $166 million $256.5 million
Furious 7 (2015) $397.7 million $147.2 million $250.5 million
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) $394 million $158 million $236 million
Marvel's The Avengers (2012) $392.5 million $207.4 million $185.1 million
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) $392.5 million $191.3 million $201.2 million
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) $382.4 million $162.6 million $219.8 billion

One thing that immediately stands out for the list is that every film has released in the past eight years. This demonstrates how important the international market has become in the past decade, with The Fate of the Furious getting 81.2 percent of the film's global opening from overseas.

In fact, the movie earned $190 million in China alone, a new record there for a Hollywood film. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, meanwhile, didn't debut in China until a month after opening domestically.

The top 10 list is also dominated by well-established franchise films. For example, there are two Fast films on the chart, two Marvel movies and two Harry Potter pictures. Notably missing is the biggest movie of all time, James Cameron's Avatar, which earned $2.78 billion during its theatrical run worldwide.

Domestically, the top 10 biggest box office openings are a different story. No Fast films make the cut, and Disney owns six of the spots after the recent success of Beauty and the Beast.

Now both top 10 lists could see shifts throughout the year. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives next month, with Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming close behind. Then, the end of 2017 sees Justice League and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

But currently, The Fate of the Furious leads the pack. For more on the movie, be sure to check out IGN's Fate of the Furious review.
