Midseason TV Preview: Winter and Spring 2017 Debuts

April's a busy month, as Better Call Saul, Fargo, The Leftovers and iZombie are among the shows returning with new seasons, while Starz offers up the latest series from Hannibal's creator with American Gods. Plus, on the revival side, this month sees the resurrections of both Prison Break and Mystery Science Theater 3000!

Liv has some big decisions to make in iZombie's third season as Andrea Savage's cutthroat Fillmore Graves CEO, Vivian Stoll, makes our undead mortician a sweet offer to join her ranks and help make Seattle a city for zombies. Meanwhile, the Ravi/Peyton/Blaine love triangle will mess with poor Ravi's head while we get to learn more bout his past as a scientist for the CDC.

Prison Break

Premiere: 04/04/17

Prison Break is back as original series stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Sarah Wayne Callies, Amaury Nolasco, Robert Knepper, Rockmond Dunbar and Paul Adelstein reunite for an all-new adventure. Filmed on location in Morocco, clues surface that suggest a previously thought-to-be-dead Michael (Miller) may be alive. Based on this, Lincoln (Purcell) and Sara (Callies) join forces to engineer the series’ biggest escape ever.

Having been renewed for an eighth, ninth, and tenth season (which will be its last), Archer kicks off Season 8 by switching over to FXX and giving us a bit of show reinvention. A time shift will take us to the Golden Age of Hollywood story as Archer attempts to find his partner’s killer in 1947 Los Angeles. Featuring the voices of H. Jon Benjamin, Jessica Walter, Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, Adam Reed and Lucky Yates.

The Get Down

Airs On: Netflix

Premiere: 4/07/17

The next 6 episodes of The Get Down (billed as The Get Down: Part II) continues Baz Luhrmann's tale of the lives and music of a ragtag crew of South Bronx teens during the transformation of 1970s New York City.

Airs On: AMC

Premiere: 4/08/17

Based on the book by Philipp Meyer, The Son is a western drama that follows two concurrent time periods: One, the story of young Eli McCullough after he is kidnapped and indoctrinated into a tribe of Comanches in 1849. The other, 60 years later, when we see a grown Eli, played by Pierce Brosnan, struggle to maintain his family’s cattle empire during the turbulent Bandit Wars of South Texas.

Better Call Saul

Premiere: 4/10/17

Breaking Bad's fan favorite crime boss Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) is about to make his debut in Better Call Saul's upcoming third season, as Jonathan Banks' Mike begins to make his way further up the bad guy ladder. Meanwhile, Michael McKean's Chuck is sure to have revenge on his mind after what Bob Odenkirk's Jimmy did to him toward the end of Season 2.

The cult classic show, and ground zero for snark-viewing, returns with a new cast featuring Jonah Ray, Felicia Day, and Patton Oswalt. WE'VE GOT MOVIE SIGN!

Doctor Who

Airs On: BBC America

Premiere: 04/15/17

Following the December 25th Christmas special, Doctor Who will kick off its new season with "A Star in Her Eye," as we're introduced to new companion Bill Potts (played by Pearl Mackie) in supposedly a very unusual way. Could this have to do with the fact that the episode was filmed in the same house used in "Blink," which featured the Weeping Angels? We'll have to find out. Matt Lucas will also reprise his role as Nardole as Peter Capaldi enters his third season as The Doctor.

Premiere: 04/15/17

Having already aired overseas, Doctor Who spinoff series Class comes to BBC America this Spring, telling the tale of four students at the Coal Hill School in London as they try to balance their teenage troubles with an oncoming apocalypse.

The Leftovers

Airs On: HBO

Premiere: 04/16/17

Not much is known about The Leftovers' third season aside from the fact that it's the show's last season and it takes place in Australia. Game of Thrones now being a summer seriesfor its seventh season means that The Leftovers can take its traditional April slot.

Silicon Valley

With Richard (Thomas Middleditch) quitting, does this mean the end of Pied Piper? Find out when Season 4 of Mike Judge's Silicon Valley premieres on April 16th.

Premiere: 4/19/17

Season 3 of FX's Fargo centers on “Emmit” and his slightly younger brother “Ray Stussy” (both played by Ewan McGregor). Emmit, the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, sees himself as an American success story, whereas Ray is more of a cautionary tale. Their sibling rivalry follows a twisted path that begins with petty theft but soon leads to murder, mobsters and cut-throat competitive bridge. Also starring Carrie Coon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and David Thewlis.

Great News

Premiere: 4/25/17

From executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) comes a new comedy about an up-and-coming news producer (Undateable's Briga Heelan) who finds out her overbearing mom (SCTV's Andrea Martin) has rejoined the workforce as an intern at her TV station.

The Handmaid's Tale

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values'. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. Also starring Yvonne Strahovski, Joseph Fiennes, Max Minghella, and Samira Wiley.

American Gods

Premiere: 4/30/17

Ian McShane, The 100's Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning, Pablo Schreiber, Gillian Anderson, Crispin Glover and more star in Bryan Fuller's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods - the story of an ex-con, Shadow (Whittle), who's offered a job by a mysterious man named Wednesday (McShane). Traveling with Wednesday exposes Shadow to a world where gods and mythological creatures exist in the flesh because people believe in them - and throws him into an oncoming war between old gods and new ones.
