What We Want in Doctor Strange 2

New female lead, villains, and more.

Yes, Marvel Studios has not yet officially announced a sequel yet to Doctor Strange, but when your latest movie makes $85 million domestically in its opening weekend and roughly $332 million worldwide so far then a second installment seems like the safest of bets. (Indeed, Ant-Man made almost $30 million less than Doctor Strange did in its opening weekend and that's getting a sequel.)

So what would we like to see Marvel do in a potential Doctor Strange 2? Here are some ideas we conjured up ...

(Some SPOILERS for the first Doctor Strange movie follow!)

Stranger Villains

Doctor Strange has faced off against some very creepy, monstrous adversaries over the decades. We'd love to see him battle some of the evil deities, demon gods, and supernatural creatures he's tangled with in the Marvel Comics. Some of these Lovecraftian characters include Shuma-Gorath, Set, Satannish, and Null the Living Darkness. We're talking beasties with multiple eyes, limbs, tentacles and the like. Imagine the sort of cool creature designs modern visual effects could accomplish with such characters.

But then there are villains such as D'Spayre and Nightmare who offer their own visual possibilities in terms of the sort of otherworldly realms and psychological and emotional pain they could inflict on Doctor Strange.

"Too Many Sorcerers"

So what of Baron Mordo? As our Comics editor Joshua Yehl suggests in our video above, it would be cool to see Mordo continue down the path to darkness in the sequel since his "breaking bad," if you will, started so late in the first movie. It would make sense then for Mordo to ally himself with a larger, more supernatural villain (like some of the aforementioned) who can help him continue on his quest to rid the world of sorcerers.

The Empirikul.

Joshua also suggests a relatively new adversary, the Empirikul, who, like Mordo in the movie's post-credits stinger, want to rid the world of sorcerers. Could the Empirikul make their MCU debut in a Strange sequel? We shall see.

New Female Lead

While we're big fans of actress Rachel McAdams, her character Dr. Christine Palmer's storyline in Doctor Strange felt adequately resolved by the end of the first movie so we think it's time to bring in a new female lead for the sequel. We have two suggestions.

First, Doctor Strange's longtime love interest, Clea, would seem like a no-brainer. In the Marvel Comics, Clea is a silver-haired sorceress and the lover and disciple of Stephen Strange. She's also the niece of Dormammu, the demonic archenemy of Doctor Strange, and is Strange's greatest ally in the Dark Dimension.

Another suggestion is more controversial: Lilith, a goddess known as the Mother of All Monsters (or Demons or Vampires, depending on who you ask). This Biblically-inspired character would also be a cool addition in that she would only be the second major female villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Cate Blanchett's Hela in the forthcoming Thor: Ragnarok.

More of Strange and Wong's Relationship

We enjoyed the sometimes contentious repartee between the film's two actors named Benedict, Cumberbatch and Wong, as Stephen Strange and Wong, respectively, and we want more of it. Seriously, Doc Strange finally got the stone-faced Wong to laugh by the end of the movie. And we'd love to see them take the streets of New York City's Greenwich Village and capture more of that Big Apple flavor of the Marvel Comics.

Becoming the Sorcerer Supreme

Doctor Strange ends without a new Sorcerer Supreme. The sequel should present enough of a challenge, a large enough threat needed to combat, for Doctor Strange to finally earn the title of Sorcerer Supreme.

The Illuminati

Will the MCU begin to sew the seeds of their own version of the Illuminati in a potential Doctor Strange sequel? This secret superhero team features some of the smartest, most powerful characters in Marvel Comics, and have been responsible for hiding both the Infinity Stones and exiling the Hulk to space.

It should be noted that were the MCU to introduce the Illuminati they would not be able to use key members Mister Fantastic and Professor X as 20th Century Fox holds the screen rights to those Marvel characters. And could a Doctor Strange sequel also introduce Black Bolt as part of the Illuminati so as to help set-up the indefinitely delayed Inhumans movie? We shall see.
