Warning: this issue contains spoilers for Thanos #1!

The new series opened in the aftermath of Civil War II, with Thanos apparently having escaped his captivity on Earth and returned to reclaim the Black Order from his former lieutenant, Corvus Glaive. He succeeded in that mission, convincing the defeated Glaive to commit suicide rather than face a more painful and prolonged death at Thanos' hands.

However, all is not well for the Mad Titan. Several familiar faces have joined forces against him, including his brother, Starfox, his son, Thane, and even his former mistress, Death herself. Their mission is simple - rid the universe of Thanos once and for all. And while many have tried and failed, Thanos' enemies have one major advantage this time. It seems the Mad Titan is already dying.

It's not clear what injury or disease is affecting Thanos, but things are looking pretty bleak already. This twist could explain why the series will focus on Thanos' efforts to claim the power of the Phoenix Force. He may need the Phoenix's power of resurrection in order to prevent his imminent demise.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out our review of Thanos #1.
