Dead Rising 4 will not feature campaign co-op, unlike previous games in the series.
Via Destructoid, Capcom Vancouver producer David McAnerin fielded a question from a fan on a stream asking whether the fourth iteration will feature co-op play in the main campaign.
“So, in the story mode, it’s a single player story mode, you’re going to play just as Frank…,” says McAnerin. “The four player co-op is our multiplayer mode. It’s a little bit inspired by the original Infinity mode for the old-school fans.”
McAnerin went on to elaborate further what the separate four-player co-op will entail.
“It’s four player co-op. It takes place in the mall. You play as four survivors who are also featured in the story as well. You get a little more backstory on them, as well. You go into the mall and take part in crazy missions, trying to survive.
“The structure is, the four of you start the game together, you start in a safe house; you get a load up, get some weapons, get yourself ready to go; we unlock the doors, it’s killing, mayhem, madness lots of interesting missions that take advantage of our systems…You have to get to the safe house to survive the end of the day.”
Dead Rising 4 sees the player return to a zombie-infested world in the hopes of completing the final chapter of Frank West; the former protagonist who’s now a professor at a community college.
During our hands-on time, we noticed Frank has had somewhat of a makeover during his time off. Gone is the hunching, slightly odd-looking man from yesteryear, and instead, Frank now looks almost like a cleaner version of The Walking Dead’s Negan.
That said, Capcom Vancouver studio head Joe Nickolls reckons the man you play as is still Frank on the inside: “He’s still a super smart-ass,” says Nickolls. “The humor is still there. He’s still Frank.”
