Civil War II #8 Cover Foreshadows Iron Man’s Defeat

Civil War II #8 seems to foreshadow the end.

We have your first look at the cover to Civil War II #8, the final issue in Marvel’s comic event series pitting Iron Man against Captain Marvel.

The cover art is by Marko Djurdjevic, who did all the covers for Civil War II.

Written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Marquez, Civil War II was originally scheduled for seven issues but an additional issue was announced to better wrap up the story. When a new Inhuman named Ulysses appears with the power to predict the future, Iron Man and Captain Marvel disagree on whether or not to act on his visions, causing the rest of the superhero community to take up arms on either side of the conflict.

Civil War II’s finale has been put off not only by adding an extra issue, but because of production delays. The publisher’s new line of Marvel NOW! comics that take place after Civil War II have already begun to hit stands, and while none outright state what happens in the end, it’s clear that something bad happens to Tony Stark that takes him off the board. This cover of a damaged Iron Man helmet laying in the mud only reinforces that he’s probably not the winner of Civil War II.

“There are many people who look at that cover and read whatever they want to read into it no matter what I say. I have decided to get very zen about the whole thing and let it unfold and let people see what they want to see,” Bendis told us in a phone interview. “Some people think Carol is the monster of this story. Some people think Tony is the monster of this story. Some people think Carol is the hero of the whole Marvel universe. Some people think that I should be taken out back and spanked. All of these things are valid.”

Bendis also talked about how he used the event comic to play with people’s expectations.

“People have made up their minds before they saw the first preview,” he said. “People saw the first page of the first issue and they're already decided the side they were on and who was right. With every issue, I try to turn the screws a little bit and get them to challenge their own opinion, right? And then keep trying to challenge it and challenge it and challenge it. That was very fun for me and I've enjoyed that. Even last week the initial reaction to Issue 6 was so lovely and I'm enjoying people enjoying it. I'm also enjoying people screaming at me because they don't know what's going to happen and they think they know what's going to happen and that's fun too. That's just a friendly reminder that I'm an actual human person with a family. You don't have to treat me like a wrestling villain, but that's okay.”

Civil War II #7 releases on November 23 and Civil War II #8 on December #28.
