From the moment he was introduced in Arrow's fourth season, DC Comics fans wondered when Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum) would become his comic book alter ego, Mr. Terrific. Season 5 has provided that answer, with Curtis joining a new team of young heroes, as Oliver tries to mold them into a more formidable group – with Curtis still having plenty to learn.
At Arrow’s recent 100th episode celebration in Vancouver -- that episode airs November 30th, as part of a big crossover with the other CW/DC series -- I spoke to Kellum about Curtis’ journey and why both he and his character are so excited about everything happening.
IGN: 100 episodes is a milestone that a lot of shows don't make.
Echo Kellum: I've been on multiple shows that did not even make 20 episodes, so I completely understand that. I just feel privileged to have played any part in helping us get to 100 episodes. It's really a testament to how wonderful the cast, crew, producers and network has been. They've been really behind the show. The fans have been so great and passionate about the show. I think that is something you have to have to get to 100 episodes. It's something that Arrow has in spade and I just can't wait to do the next 100.
IGN: You’re not just a part of Arrow – you’re a part of this multi-show universe, playing one of the many superheroes in it. Is it kind of overwhelming?
Kellum: It's overwhelming in the best way possible. It's something that I couldn't have thought of in my wildest dream that I get to be a part of. I think growing up for me one of my favorite thing about comics was the crossover events where, say, Apocalypse would be so powerful that it would cause other heroes from other universes [to help]. To come in and see this DC universe, the Berlanti universe, to hone that in and bring it to us in the form of TV, it’s mind blowing that I get to play even an iota in that... I feel so privileged and so thankful to be able to live the life that I live right now and to be a part of this universe. I'm just still pinching myself. I did this post the other day, like, "Someone go tell kid me, wow, dude… Life gets pretty amazing!" It's just kind of stuck in that place of “Holy crap, I can't believe what life I'm living right now.”
IGN: Curtis has got a suit now, but your producers have told us it’s not the final suit.
Kellum: Yeah, it's the prototype right now. I can't wait for people to see where this character goes and his journey throughout this season. It's going to be tough for him. It's not going to be a cakewalk. We talked about that in the first episode, that he has the furthest way to go of all the heroes. You're really going to see him struggle with that but I think it's really going to pay off when you see him finally start to succeed, and his determination, and the smarts and his athleticism is really going to start coming into play. You see him start kicking ass. I'm really excited. And then the final Mr. Terrific suit is mint.
IGN: The 100th episode is also part of the multi-show crossover. Does you character get to interact with some of the other heroes?
Kellum: Absolutely. He interacts with Flash and a lot of the characters from that show, and Supergirl. They kind of really get into some depth of trying to figure out what's going on with the alien situation. It's a really fun episode. I really feel privileged to be a part of that. To see new team Arrow kind of step into the fray with these other characters is really fun.
IGN: Is it a mixture of real life and your character, since Curtis, like Echo, would be really excited to meet these costumed characters?
Kellum: Oh yeah, 100 percent. I mean, I used to work at Geek Squad for like 3 years so I was into computer tech and all that stuff too, but Curtis is also like a huge geek and fan boy and whatnot. There are a lot of similarities between us that comes out in that character.
Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8pm ET/PT on the CW.
