Additional Dragon Quest games won't be confined to Japan, as Dragon Quest Builders producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto has come forward to say that Square Enix is "committed" to releasing more titles from its popular fantasy role-playing series in the west.
In an interview with MCV, Fujimoto noted that while Dragon Quest is "not as well known in the west as we would like, [the franchise] really plays an epoch making role in the console gaming history." The publisher sees a great opportunity to now expand the series to a larger audience who "may be surprised to the sheer breadth of the universe, in terms of variety and depth."
Fujimoto cited Dragon Quest Builders as a great first step in that direction, adding that Square Enix is "committed to bringing more Dragon Quest titles in the west," and that the publisher "believe[s] it truly has potential to succeed even better."
The producer also spoke to the success of Dragon Quest Builders thus far, calling the game's performance in Japan "superb," garnering over half a million sales within the first few days of launch in the territory.
Dragon Quest Builders released earlier this month for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. For our thoughts on the Minecraft-inspired RPG, read IGN's Dragon Quest Builders review. A remake of Dragon Quest VII also finally made its way west for 3DS owners in September, our review for which you can read right here.
This year marks the 30th anniversary for the Dragon Quest franchise. Square Enix is currently at work on Dragon Quest XI for release on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and 3DS. Earlier this year, series creator Yuji Horii said the game's story is nearly complete and his team hopes to launch DQXI in Japan sometime before May 27, 2017.
