James Wan on Aquaman and Mera's Love-Hate Chemistry

"Amber’s character is super strong.... You don’t wanna mess with her."

Aquaman director James Wan has come forward to shed light on the romance between Jason Momoa's Aquaman and Amber Heard's Mera, highlighting the "hate-turned-love" dynamic between the two.

Speaking with Bustle at the Australians in Film Awards, Wan said he wants the film to have a "classic action-adventure-romance aspect," and as such will serve as a sort of blend of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone.

With regard to how the relationship between Aquaman and Mera will play out in the film, Momoa said that while "it starts off initially with them not quite clicking with each other," over the course of the film the two grow closer to one another and "learn to try and work together."

It's a dynamic that Wan believes "will be really interesting," thanks in large part to the incredible strength of Mera. "Amber’s character is super strong, she’s very powerful as well. You don’t wanna mess with her," Wan added. That said, Mera will also have a "sort of feminine quality" and serve as a "contrast to Momoa," who the director describes as being more like a "muscular machine."

Aquaman opens in theaters on July 27, 2018.
