A special demo of Pokemon Sun and Moon was released on October 18 for the Nintendo 3DS, a full month before the game’s full release.

Getting the demo is as simple as launching the Nintendo 3DS eShop and choosing the demo to download. It should remain on the main page for quite some time. You will need 3,055 blocks open on your SD card in order to download the Pokemon Sun and Moon demo. Unlike some demos, there is no limit to the number of times you can launch it.
There are quite a few tasks to complete in the demo that reward you with items. Once the full game is released, you will be able to transfer these gifts by speaking with Professor Kukui inside the Pokemon Center. The only gift obtainable during the "main" demo is the Ash-Greninja. The rest will be accessible only after Professor Kukui gives you a Ride Pager.
The Greninja that accompanies the player in the demo used to belong to Ash of the animated Pokemon series. This Greninja's ability, Battle Bond, allows it to transform into Ash-Greninja, an alternate, more powerful form similar to Mega Evolution. To earn the right to transfer over this special Greninja, simply complete the main part of the demo! You will know you have completed it when a short trailer plays and you're brought back to the start screen.
Starting the demo up again will conintue you where you "left off," allowing you to complete extra activities to receive the following rewards.
A few trainers have gathered on Ten Carat Hill. Access all three by smashing rocks with B while riding Taurus. Greninja will make quick work out of all of them. After they have been defeated, Ace Trainer Sheri, near the entrance, will challenge you. Make sure your Greninja is healed before battling, as she has a Jangmo-o and a formiddable level 42 Pikachu with her.
This is easily the most difficult opponent you will face in the demo.
Water Shuriken, Ash-Greninja's most poweful move, should be enough to knock out the Pikachu before it can cause too much damage.
Once leaving the Pokemon Center, make a right, and head all the way down to the line of Slowpoke blocking the road. A girl to the left will offer to "take you to a nice place." Take her up on the offer to be transported to Mahalo Trail. Use Y to call on Taurus using the Ride Pager, and smash all the rocks leading up the path with B. There, a mysterious man will reward you with three Stardust.
Go to Ten Carat Hill and immediately make a right while on Tauros. Destroy the rocks blocking your path and speak to the man there to start up the Pokemon-Catching Challenge. Catch three Pokemon, then end the challenge to receive your Nugget!
We caught 18 Pokemon but received no extra reward. Also, every Pokemon you catch will be released after the challenge is over, and any extra Poke Balls must be forfeited as well. The Pokemon that appear in the tall grass in this area are the same that appear elsewhere, except they are leveled in their 30s.
There are a number of unlockables that will only become available on certain days. Whether or not you can still can access the items after the day they are supposed to arrive remains to be seen. This list of items include:
- 10/19 - Pretty Wing x10
- 10/23 - TBA
- 10/30 - TBA
- 11/05 - TBA
- 11/11 - TBA
Keep reading to see where to find each one!
This is the first gift you will get from the many people around town who mention events that will happen in a specific amount of time. The guy outside of the Pokemon Center says, "Not today, not the day after tomorrow. It's gotta be tomorrow. Got it?"
Talk to him on 10/19/16 after you began the demo to receive ten Pretty Wings!
Make a left outside of the Pokemon Center, and then another left.
The woman on the corner in a large floppy hat says she is meeting up with a guy who helped her when she sprained her ankle on 10/23/16.
A man inside City Hall will be celebrating his Pikachu's birthday on 10/30/16.
Outside of the Ferry Terminal, a police man says a shady deal will happen in that very spot on 11/05/16.
A lady inside the Ferry Terminal says she must sail away on a ship on 11/11/16. Make sure to promise that you'll be there that day!
When starting the demo, make sure you've chosen the language you definitely want to play in. You will be unable to change the language once you've started.
After reading a letter from an unknown sender about the Greninja in your party, Sun, the player-character, visits City Hall with his mother to change their address.
The Greninja in your party actually once belonged to Ash from Pokemon the Series: XYZ. Its Battle Bond ability allows it to transform into Ash-Greninja after defeating a Pokemon in battle. Once the main portion of the demo is complete, you will be able to transfer this Greninja into your Pokemon Sun or Moon game!
Hau will greet you inside of City Hall. Stepping outside, Team Skull Grunts will confront you. Their single Yungoos is easy to defeat. Go north to meet Hau at the Pokemon Center.
Once inside, Hau will give you a Super Potion and introduce you to Professor Kukui. Accept Prof. Kukui's Trial proposal, and head north again to travel to Ten Carat Hill.
If you decide to explore before travelling, you will discover you can now enter the areas with tall grass previously blocked by red gates. Because you are never given Poke Balls, or given the ability to buy them, you will never be able to catch these Pokemon here. You can battle the wild Pokemon, but from our experience, Greninja will not level up beyond level 37.
These are the Pokemon you can encounter in the tall grass in the demo:
Follow the path on Ten Carat Hill north and battle Youngster Honus, who has a level 28 Rockruff, another easy win with Water Shuriken.
Enter the cave, where Professor Kukui will give you a Poke Finder to take pictures of four Pokemon, two Jangmo-o and two Hakamo-o, as part of the Trial. He also entrusts you with his Pikachu to help you with these tasks.

The Poke Finder appears as the Rotom Pokedex we've heard about previously, and can store six photos before running out of space. Once investigating a spot, you can move the camera by either physically moving the 3DS or using the Circle Pad. Press the R button at the right time to take a photo. This will startle the Pokemon being photographed and initiate a battle.
With this item in hand, simply travel through the cave and investigate spots where you "sense" Pokemon. There are two Jangmo-o and one Hakamo-o within the cave. Use Greninja's effective Night Slash against the Jangmo-o, and the super effective Aerial Ace against the Hakamo-o.
Once these have been photographed and defeated, head north-west to exit the cave, where you will encounter the level 36 Totem Hakamo-o.
A Water Shuriken will take care of the Rockruff the Totem Hakamo-o calls upon for help.
With the defeat of the Totem Hakamo-o, you have completed the Trial! Professor Kukui rewards you with a Z-Ring (which goes on your wrist) and the Z-Crystal Electrium Z to be used with Pikachu.
After this, Hau runs out of the cave with the two Team Skull Grunts chasing after him. They have come with Team Skull Admin Plumeria seeking revenge.
The big sister uses an "adorable" Golbat. Use Pikachu's super effective Z-Move, Gigavolt Havoc, to take it out in a single shot.
Defeating Plumeria marks the completion of the main demo! See the unlockables section for more to do upon starting the demo back up after the trailer plays.
