Assassination Classroom Creator's Thoughts on Spin-offs, Dubbed Anime

"...The students' lives are just beginning."

A yellow, octopus-like creature that can move at Mach 20 speed is planning on destroying the earth, and the only thing that can stop him is his class of junior high school delinquents armed with an assortment of weird weapons. This is Assassination Classroom, and IGN had the chance to send a few questions to its creator Yusei Matsui during New York Comic Con.

With the wild, heartfelt anime and manga concluded, we asked Matsui (through a translator) about his work experiences, how he came up with a character like Koro-sensei, and briefly discussed what's next for him and the Assassination Classroom kids.

Warning: Mild spoilers for the end of Assassination Classroom follow!

IGN: Were you surprised to see how popular Assassination Classroom is in the west? What do you think made the series such a popular manga and anime globally?

Matsui: We had an autograph session at a bookstore, and it was amazing to see everyone wrapped around the block. It was cool to be able to influence the scenery in New York, even just a bit. It really reinforced for me that the worries and frustrations of the students in Assassination Classroom were universal.

IGN: How did you come up with a character like Koro-sensei?

Matsui: If Koro-sensei was in human form, the story would be too serious. For students to have fun assassinating him, he needed to be in somewhat of a non-serious-looking form. Thankfully, I had a character left over from an old scrapped project, so I reused that design for Koro-sensei.

IGN: Have you seen the Assassination Classroom English dub? What do you think about it?

Matsui: I was amazed at how similar the dub actors sounded to the original Japanese! I could really feel the passion they put into doing a faithful adaptation. I was very happy with it.

IGN: What are some of your favorite memories working on Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo as an assistant?

Matsui: [Yoshio Sawai] is a gag manga creator, so he always tries to play things for laughs during everyday conversation. If he starts a conversation with you, you have to return a witty answer or else he’ll get grumpy. I think I was able to practice my sense for comedy during that time.

IGN: Now that the Assassination Classroom has ended its run, what do you want to do next? Do you have another manga in the works?

Matsui: I’ve got absolutely nothing planned. After finishing a project, I like to clear my head, do nothing, and wait for inspiration for my next project.

IGN: Would you want to do a follow up series to Assassination Classroom, or your own spin-off? I’ve seen that people would love to read a spin-off series featuring Nagisa as a teacher.

Matsui: At some point, I’d like to if I have the opportunity. Assassination Classroom is completely finished, but the students’ lives are just beginning. Personally, I’m interested in seeing what sort of possibilities they’ll find in the future.
