While it was previously announced that Disney Channel star Zendaya will play a character named Michelle in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the actress may actually be starring as a key character from the comics that fans will no doubt recognize.

Two sources "with knowledge of the project" have told TheWrap that Zendaya will play Mary Jane Watson. Sony declined to comment to IGN on the outlet's report, so bear that in mind as the studio has yet to make an official announcement.
Mary Jane Watson is a central character in the Spider-Man universe, serving as one of Peter Parker's most well known love interests. Kirsten Dunst played MJ in Sam Raimi's movie trilogy, which starred Tobey Maguire as its leading man.
A new promotional image for the film reveals a better look at Holland's Spider-Man costume from the solo film, and the film has also reportedly found an actor to play one of the movie's villains, the Tinkerer.
