The new Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander will open in theaters on March 16, 2018, Warner Bros. and MGM announced today.
News of the movie's release date comes by way of Variety, and follows Warners' announcement in April that Vikander (Ex Machina) will play the movie's tomb-raiding heroine, Lara Croft.
Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug will direct the upcoming reboot, which will serve as an origin story for Lara and draw inspiration from the latest games in Square Enix's popular action adventure franchise. The director has also said he aims to provide a relatable and more human take on the video game icon.
Oscar winner Vikander was a fan of the series growing up, saying she used to play Tomb Raider in secret when her parents wouldn't allow it.
