Actress Noel Neill - the first actress to play Superman stalwart Lois Lane onscreen - has died at 95 after a long illness.
The news was announced by her manager, Larry Ward on Facebook. He said, "Noel truly was Lois Lane, and for many of us, she was the first working woman seen on television. Few of her fans actually knew her real name, almost always simply calling her "Lois" to which she would unfailing answer with a bright smile and a kind word. It was more than a role to her."
The DC Comics Twitter account said since said she was "brave, smart, and witty. She embodied the very best qualities of Lois Lane."
- Neill appeared as Lane in the original 1948 Superman film, before reprising the role in Atom Man vs. Superman (1950), the 1953 series Adventures of Superman, and even a public service film about US stamps, Stamp Day for Superman (1954).
She retired from full-time acting in 1958, but appeared in small roles in new Superman films for the rest of her life. She played Lois Lane's mother, Ella Lane in 1978's Superman and appeared in both the Superboy series and Superman Returns.
The city of Metropolis, Indiana even installed a Lois Lane statue in her likeness in 2011.
Neill also appeared in a number of Westerns up until the 1950s, for which she was awarded the 2004 Golden Boot. She considered this her favourite award.
