Uncharted 4: A Thief's End – announced to be the final installment of Nathan Drake's adventures – is now finished and in final code, which means creative director Neil Druckmann has started getting feedback about what people think of the end of the game.
"I think people will discuss the ending. If focus tests are anything to go by, there will be some arguments about the ending," he told IGN during a recent A Thief's End gameplay event. "I'm excited. Indifference would be the worst thing. I would rather have people hate it than be indifferent to it. We'll see how they react."
Does that mean Nathan Drake is heading toward a final end? "Do you really want me to tell you? You don't really want me to tell you," Druckmann said, laughing, when asked point-blank if Nate will survive the end of the game.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was first released in 2007 on the PS3, and the franchise has evolved significantly since then. (You can learn more about the mechanical updates in Uncharted 4 in our preview.) But Druckmann said Naughty Dog didn't let audience perception or commentary about Nathan Drake's adventures alter their vision.
"What I found is you kind of have to ignore other people. Any time you try to please something outside yourself, it can easily come off as false," he said. "Whenever we make something that's honest to us that is the game we truly want to play, you know whether you succeed or not. You pick up the controller and you're playing it and you're like, 'Am I feeling anything from these characters? Am I having fun? Am I intrigued? Am I bored? Do I even care about this character?' And if not, OK, I need to fix that for myself. I found that the more we've done that, the more successful we've been, and that's the only correlation I can come up with."
Regardless of the ultimate reception to the end of A Thief's End, Druckmann is looking forward to getting the game out into the world. "I'm giddy because we're done," he said. "We have final code but people aren't playing it yet, so I'm anxious."
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End hits store shelves on May 10.
