"Once you see the first crack..."
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Doubts began to overtake just about everyone this week on The Path. Most notably, on "Breaking and Enterting," Eddie's questioning-of-things returned in full force. Granted, he's not willing to go the extra mile just yet. He's too invested in the Meyerist life. His entire world and family is tangled up in it. So, for now, his crisis can only extend so far. But after busting into Alison's hotel room with Cal, and seeing her hiding out on the balcony, Eddie's now back to wondering whether or not Meyerism is out to do more harm than good.
And, because The Path is a good show that doesn't just paint in black and white, Cal himself was also able to see the wrong in what he'd done. And how he'd been driven by revenge. Which led him toward a big humanitarian act at the end of the episode. Everyone on the show is more than one thing, which always creates great drama.
Of course, if Alison's husband was murdered - and if it all had to do with some sort of pancreatic cancer treatment conspiracy - then there is an underlying "evil" nestled within the movement. Somewhere. A villain lurking. But it's too easy to think that it's Cal. He's already been shown to have too many layers for that type of nefariousness. He's human, which means he can be petty and cruel. And his temper might suggest that he could be a killer. But nothing so far has led us to think he's in on some of the cult's bigger, deeper trafficking operations.
Back to doubts though. Hawk was torn over his feelings for Ashley and his devotion to his family. Though his feelings seemed to win out in that mini-van. And Ashley did make some decent points about how the Meyerists were just another "Join us or suffer" religions. Most interesting here though was the fact that Ashley's mom seemed to be slowly finding meaning and acceptance (and work) thanks to the movement, despite being the most hesitant about everything at the outset.
Sarah, meanwhile, did a bit of trespassing of her own when she tracked down her long lost sister Tessa (the show once again spotlighting how the movement can also splinter families). In Tessa's home, Sarah saw evidence of what seemed to be a happy, fulfilled life - complete with husband and kids. Not signs of a "lost soul" like the Meyerists would have you believe was the fate of anyone who shunned the "Ladder."
So Sarah was going through so s*** to, putting it mildly. Not to mention her growing connection/obsession with Cal. One that Eddie can sense with every fiber of his being. In fact, the ending basically showed us Eddie looking at his family and cult life through different, distorted eyes. Almost similar to the drug trip he experienced down in Peru. Like Alison told him, "Once you see the first crack, you see cracks all over."
The Verdict
"Breaking and Entering" exposed a lot of cracks in the veneer of the Meyerists, possibly setting up bigger spirals as the show edges towards the end of Season 1. The doubts that Eddie had at the beginning, which kicked off the series, have now returned. And they may not be going away this time.
