Once Upon a Time: "Our Decay" Review

Everyone can have true love.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Hades and Zelena sitting on a bicycle... Yep. "Our Decay" explored the past between the ruler of the Underworld and the Wicked Witch. I wanted to say tawdry past, but we didn't even get a kiss. Instead, there was a flimsy connection made over the period of a few hours because true love can happen in such a short period of time, apparently. The most intriguing aspect of their relationship was trying to determine whether Hades was being genuine with his profession of love or if his romantic mood was about him trying to get revenge on his brother.

In fact, Greg Germann was the best part of the entire episode. He needs to be given more work. He poured just the right amount of suaveness into his interactions with Zelena to make you guess about his intentions towards her. Did he really become so smitten so quickly? If not, making the town look like Storybrooke was unnecessary. He had no guarantee Zelena would ever see what he made for her. Then again, he could be lying to her about why the Underworld looks like Storybrooke. No wonder Zelena was conflicted.

Zelena's been burned so frequently, it fit for her to be distrustful of Hades. At the same time, based on what we know of her, she wants to be wanted and loved by someone. I respect her for not going all weak in the knees over Hades and showing caution. It goes against the usual fairy tale route -- not that Zelena and Hades are the average fairy tale couple.

We saw some character growth for Zelena, too. It seemed inevitable the birth of her and Robin's child would change her for the better, but since she was sent packing to Oz, she hasn't had a chance to show her motherly side. Her first move with trying to kidnap the baby was what you'd expect, but she realized the danger she put the child in. Huh. She put her daughter's needs before herself, and I'll be darned if I wasn't touched by Zelena breaking down over how she accidentally hurt her child.

Speaking of children, Belle learned she was pregnant. The whole exchange between her and Rumplestiltskin was pleasantly surprising. Their conversation was a little frustrating too, but hey, at least it was honest?

Their relationship has been a constant struggle. Belle loves the good sides of Rumple and believes he can kick his Dark One persona and stop desiring power. Rumple has tried to stay on team light side, but it hasn't worked for him. He finally admitted as much to Belle, and I found his frankness refreshing. It is who he is, and though it's ugly, it's part of him. If Belle isn't cool with accepting the beast as well as the man, it's up to her to walk away. That bolsters her agency because it gives her all the information to make a decision with. Nothing's being kept from her anymore.

And finally: Henry's "Everyone's a writer" quip was cheeky and spot on.

The Verdict

We only learned about the Hades and Zelena connection in the last episode, and twenty minutes of flashbacks in this episode weren't enough to sell their love story. Two characters known for being evil need extra time to make genuine feelings convincing, and it didn't happen here.
