The Biggest Esports Highlights Of The Week

A selection of highlights from the best in Aussie esports this week.

We're back on the local beat with the Esports Highlights this week! The ESL Studios were a busy place as they held finals for the Rocket League ESL AU Invitationals, Rainbow Six ANZ Invitationals and the CSGO Season 4 Finals. At Riot's headquarters the OPL wrapped up Split 2's regular season, and over in Gamescom EA revealed their esports focused mode for Battlefield 1.

We're still updating our calendar and if your Aussie event isn't on it we want to know! Remember you can email tips to me esportsau@ign.com or you can just click to send me an email. If you want, you can tweet suggestions at me as well, my twitter is down the bottom of this article. Make sure you check out the rest of the esports hub, as well!

Rainbow Six Siege - ANZ Invitational Finals

The Rainbow Six Siege ANZ Invitational Finals took place over the weekend, and while there were some tech difficulties early on — apparently caused by a conflict between some steam settings and the Studio's firewall — the games were thrillers. Athletico took on Corvidae, and while Corvidae were the caster's favourites to win, Athletico walked away with the Trophy, the prize money and the W. Watch Athletico secure an unlikely victory on Kafe below.

Rocket League - ESL AU & NZ Invitational Qualifier

Rocket League Leagues are springing up all over the joint, which is fantastic if you enjoy watching top tier car-soccer action. Multiple team acquisitions are occurring as well as well-established Aussie esports organisations start to get involved with the scene. The Chiefs and Avant Garde have both acquired otherwise unsigned teams recently — the new Chiefs team in particular wasted no time in doing their new organisation proud. Watch them take on Pale Horse in the finals below — they'd go on to win the series, but Pale Horse constructed a beautiful three player goal in our highlight.

CSGO - ESL AU & NZ Season 4 Finals

Newish CS:GO heavyweights the Kings reigned supreme this week, opening with a dominating performance against the Chiefs in the Unikrn TV Australian Showdown before going on to also dominate in the ESL ANZ Championship Finals. Colliding with Avant Garde in the finals, the games were a close best of five. The fifth game went just shy of a tie-breaker, but the Kings were too regal in the end. Watch Kings Sico snag an unlikely win from the jaws of defeat below.

LOL - OPL Split 2 Week 9

Split 2's regular season is over and the gauntlet is taking shape Sin and Avant will kick things off, with Sin no doubt hoping to replicate their performance from the Split 1 Gauntlet. The Chiefs placed third, losing in a nailbiter to the Dire Wolves, Legacy secured second place and the Dire Wolves' win let them take the week off until the Finals. The Dire Wolves and the Chiefs was close deep into their third game, until an ill-advised teamfight swung momentum towards last split's champions. Watch it below.

Battlefield 1 - Incursions Introduction

Battlefield 1 introduced us to Incursions at Gamescom, a competitive mode where two teams of five clash. It's clearly aimed at esports, with class drafting and more competitive scoring systems. They're saying a lot of the things we want to hear too — vehicles have a place in the game mode and they're listening to pro players to get the competitive details right. The question is — will people want to play a version of Battlefield which is foreign to what people think of when they think about Battlefield? We'll have to wait for more details.
