Overwatch: 'Significant Changes' Could Be Coming to D.Va

“…we want to nerf defense matrix as an ability, not D.Va as a hero.”

Overwatch hero D.Va is currently being tested with a brand new offensive ability as well as major changes to both her mobility and defense matrix.

Fan favorite tank, D.Va may be getting a new ability and a serious overhaul according to a recent post on the official Overwatch forums. Principle designer Geoff Goodman said they've been testing the changes internally and laid out changes that include being able to shoot in-flight, as well as a never-before-seen micro missiles ability to "allow her to play more aggressively and deal more damage than before." However this comes at a cost with her defense matrix taking a serious on hit on energy which means, according to Goodman, "D.Va won't be able to use it nearly as often overall." The full list of changes can be found below:

  • Defense Matrix: Energy drain increased by 2x. This means her effective uptime for this ability has been reduced by 50%.
  • Boosters: D.Va can now use her fusion cannons while flying.
  • Micro Missiles (New Ability): D.Va launches a long salvo of small missiles that explode on impact, dealing damage in a small radius around them. This ability can be used while using her other abilities or firing her fusion cannons.

Goodman goes on to say that overall the changes are to "to reduce her reliance on defense matrix and make her more fun to play." He also added that these changes will, "hopefully" get into a new PTR soon. D.Va has found her way into many team comps due to her tank/offense versatility, so it’s not surprising that more changes could be on the way to increase her attack output.

Overwatch fans are also due another treat tomorrow in the form of a new character short to be livestreamed on the Official Blizzard Reveal Ceremony. And be sure to check IGN's Gamescom hub for all the latest info on everything revealed at the show.
