Microsoft Talking to Sony About Cross-Play

Xbox's Aaron Greenberg is "hopeful" for future cross-network play.

Following the announcement of several games featuring cross-play between PCs and consoles, excluding the PlayStation 4, at E3 2017, a Microsoft executive has explained that they and Sony are in ongoing discussions about making cross-network play a reality some day.

Speaking to Game Reactor, Xbox Head of Marketing Aaron Greenberg confirmed the companies have discussed the possibility of cross-play and continue to do so. Greenberg remains hopeful that Sony will be supportive of the initiative.

"Absolutely, yeah. We're talking to Sony [about cross-play], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it," Greenberg told Game Reactor.

At E3, both Minecraft and Rocket League revealed cross-network play as an option for players on the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. PlayStation 4 players of both games, however, currently will not be able to participate in cross-play with players on either of those systems. Speaking at E3, Sony Interactive Europe's Jim Ryan said Sony's decision to not partake in cross-play in part came from a concern over player safety online.

Xbox's Phil Spencer responded to Ryan's comments, saying he was unsure of why safety had become part of the cross-network play dialogue and that the company "would never put Minecraft in a place where we felt like we weren’t keeping our players safe."

Psyonix's Jeremy Dunham told IGN at E3 that he believes cross-network play is vital to the growth of the industry.

Earlier this year, IGN took a look at the dream of cross-network play versus the realities of implementing it.
