At Gamescom today Linksys announced the WRT32X, a new router that the company is calling “the first true gaming router.”
Developed in collaboration with Rivet Networks, it takes advantage of Rivet’s “Killer Networking Prioritization Engine,” which can prioritize gaming over whatever else is using internet bandwidth on your network.
That means if you’re maxing out your internet, things like downloads and streaming will automatically slow down to let gaming go faster. However this will only work with “Killer-enabled” PCs, not consoles or mobile gaming.
Linksys claims that this prioritization can deliver “up to 77 percent reduction in peak ping for faster response time,” but caveats that by saying the figure was acquired when testing a PC on a 10 Mb/s connection with other devices also in use. It’s safe to assume people with connections that aren't overloaded may not see the same speed increase.
The WRT32X is available to preorder now for $300 and is expected to begin shipping in September. Until then, here are our picks for the best gaming router right now.
