Iron Fist Showrunner Defends Danny Rand's Personality

Inhumans EP Scott Buck also addresses the series' new showrunners and more.

While Iron Fist's first season received criticism for its depiction of Danny Rand, showrunner Scott Buck explained how viewers may not have expected the character to be a foil to the other Defenders.

Speaking to IGN during the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Buck told IGN that he and the show's creative team designed Danny as someone who is "always going to see the good side of things and always going to be an optimist," rather than another "dark, brooding character."

"But do you really want four dark, brooding Defenders?...We created him to fit into that world and be a counterpoint to some of the others," Buck said. "Perhaps people were not aware that there were reasons for creating a character with that sort of specific [personality]."

Rand will go on to serve as that counterpoint later this month in The Defenders — and you can read IGN's spoiler-free thoughts about how The Defenders' first four episodes are. As to whether Buck continued to give input to The Defenders' depiction of Danny, he said producers Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez "just needed to know basics of [the] character," as Iron Fist had not been completed by the time The Defenders began writing.

"I gave them whatever input I possibly could, but Defenders is entirely their creature," Buck said.

Still, Buck said "there's so much" he didn't get to do with the character in the first season, in regard to both Danny and Colleen Wing.

"Their world is just starting to become bigger and bigger because both of them, in their own ways, have been leading combined lives," Buck said. "I think the influence of them two meeting each other and then meeting the other Defenders has opened them up to a much bigger world and bigger possibilities."

Buck will have a whole different world, or at least, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe world, to shepherd, as he brings Inhumans to ABC this September.

The series, which had already been a point of discussion at an earlier TCA panel, drew Buck's attention despite his plans to take time off after Iron Fist.

"...Jeph [Loeb] approached me and pitched this show to me. It was so compelling that I just couldn't say no to it," he said.

Leaving Iron Fist means that a new showrunner is taking over the character Buck wanted to do so much more with. He's confident in the future of Danny Rand, however, as the show has been confirmed for a second season.

"They found a great showrunner to take over Iron Fist, Raven. It's in his hands now. He's a terrific writer and he's going to do a great job," Buck said.
