How the Snowpiercer TV Series Differs From the Film

Hamilton star Daveed Diggs talks being aboard the crazy Snowpiercer train.

While Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer film brought to life the world of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, the upcoming TNT Snowpiercer series will explore the themes and mechanics of the world in much more detail, according to star Daveed Diggs.

The Hamilton star — a self-professed sci-fi fan who is currently catching up on Nora K. Jemisin's The Broken Earth series — said the chance to really dive into the world the film introduced on screen will help differentiate it from Joon-ho's work.

"As a fan of the film and reading the scripts, it broadens the world exponentially. and that's one of the advantages of TV, you have time," Diggs said while promoting the upcoming ABC comedy The Mayor during the Television Critics Association press tour.

"So the politics that are hinted at in the film are explored in much more depth, and the mechanism of the train [is explored further] — just the little things that create a world, world specificity. It's the thing, specifics, it's why i'm a sci-fi nerd. It's what's drew me to Snowpiercer and what drew me to [The Mayor]."

Diggs plays Layton Well, who lives in the Tail end of the titular Snowpiercer train, which travels the world nonstop in a post-apocalyptic setting. Divided by class, Well's Tail section is primarily where the poorer citizens of the train live, as did Chris Evans' Curtis Everett in the 2013 film.

In addition to Diggs, Jennifer Connelly will star in the show, which will have a pilot directed by Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson and is executive produced by Josh Friedman. TNT and TBS Kevin Reilly spoke earlier during the TCA summer tour about how the Snowpiercer show will have an ongoing mystery element to it. The series is currently in the development/pilot stage.
