Furious Director Gives Bourne Legacy 2 Status Update

It's been four years since Lin was first linked with the project.

It's been nearly four years since the news that Fast & Furious director Justin Lin was attached to helm a sequel to 2012's The Bourne Legacy, Universal's franchise spin-off starring Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross. And judging from what Lin had to tell IGN's Terri Schwartz today, that's about as far as his involvement with the proposed film went.

IGN asked Lin about the status of The Bourne Legacy 2 at the Television Critics Association summer press tour today, where he was there to promote S.W.A.T., the new CBS series he's exec producing. "I talk to Jeremy all the time and, technically, it's still in-development but look ...," Lin replied, citing the actor -- who currently plays Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- as the reason why he was interested in a Bourne film to begin with.

"Jeremy, I'm one of his biggest fans and I think I signed on because we'd been looking for stuff to work together and we still look for stuff to work together. It was just an opportunity at that time," said Lin, who went on to direct Star Trek Beyond after the Bourne Legacy 2 news broke back in 2013.

"It was actually getting to be really exciting, but I also realized that's a whole other franchise universe," Lin continued, "and so to me my connection to it is through Jeremy  and we're finding some really great things to hopefully work together on."

Lin was less than committal when pressed if he would still be up for making Bourne Legacy 2 should Renner hit upon the perfect idea for it: "We're in touch, we're in touch. Yeah, I love Jeremy."

While a direct sequel to the Tony Gilroy-directed Bourne Legacy has yet to happen, Universal did eventually bring back series star Matt Damon for 2016's Jason Bourne, which earned $415.5 million at the worldwide box office to The Bourne Legacy's $276.1 million.

Lin also offered IGN updates on several of his other projects, including Space Jam 2 and the Hot Wheels movie adaptation.
