Final Fantasy XV is expanding its horizons once again, with the announcement of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition for iOS, Android and Windows 10 devices, launching later this year.
The news follows hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement that Final Fantasy XV is receiving a PC version.
Revealed at Gamescom by Square Enix, the Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition "retells the story" of the original game over ten downloadable episodes, with all episodes launching simultaneously and, as a bonus, the first episode will be free of charge.
The trailer - which you can see above - showcases a selection of scenes from the original game, in new adorable chibi form. It seems from the trailer that gameplay and combat will remain broadly the same, although tweaked and simplified for mobile play. Square Enix want this to be a version of Final Fantasy XV which gives players the freedom to journey through Eos "whenever and wherever they want."
Final Fantasy XV is an absolutely huge game, and when we reviewed it last year we thought that the four main characters were "the beating heart of the experience." It remains to be seen whether the mobile version can evoke similar reactions, but it certainly seems that Square Enix are committed to distilling the essence of the original game into this new chibi form.
There's no current release date other than a broad "Fall 2017."
Alongside the Pocket Edition announcement, Square-Enix also broke some news on their first-person fishing adventure VR spin-off, Monster of the Deep, confirming a November 21 release date. The game will feature a Story Mode which sees Noctis and friends traveling across Eos, as well as Free Fishing Mode which will feature a "variety of challenges" in various locations from the original game. As a bonus to super-keen fishing fans, starting tomorrow Square Enix are also offering a custom dynamic theme to anyone who pre-orders the game, along with a special Samurai Outfit to use in the game.
Final Fantasy XV fans certainly have a lot to look forward to - as well as the Windows and Pocket Editions and Monsters of the Deep, there is also DLC based around Noctis' companion Ignis coming this December, and a multiplayer mode is on the horizon.
Matt Davidson is a freelance writer for IGN who doesn't even like fishing games but is still pre-ordering that sweet sweet Samurai outfit. Check him out on Twitter.
