Dragon Ball Super Episode 101 Review

Justice for all.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

The Tournament of Power is drawing ever closer to completion, which causes Universe 11 to step up this week and start dealing out some justice. The result was a fun, action-packed episode that saw Universe 11 far worse off than anyone could’ve imagined. Amidst it all, one of the most touching moments in recent Dragon Ball memory occurred, making for a nice emotional surprise during all the chaos.

One of the greatest aspects of the Tournament of Power arc has been the resurgence of old characters. This week we saw that in spades, as Master Roshi, Tien, and both Androids were utilized frequently, displaying their unique skills and talents we saw them practice leading up to the tournament. Simply showing them off fighting would’ve been enough, but taking it a step further by showcasing them winning battles is even better. Their power levels will never compete with the likes of Goku, but in this battle royale setting where the weak and strong are all fighting, they have their moments to shine. I’m quite pleased to see Super not glossing over them in favor of Goku.

The Universe 7 fighters were great, but it was the Saiyan women from Universe 6 that stood out the most this week. Kale was forced to watch as her idol Caulifla was pummeled by attacks, all while Caulifla spoke to her, insisting she would do anything to protect her. This sad moment was enough to trigger Kale’s inner strength, and turn her not into a wild beast like we saw earlier, but a proper Super Saiyan. Nearly everything about the scene was perfectly executed, from the great music to the contrasting colors of Kale’s golden energy against the dark purple background. Beyond just the visuals, this transformation felt earned, as we could feel her sadness and inner struggle to help. With such great moments like this, it’s hard not to root for them to win the tournament. I hope all this time we’ve spent with them means they will be around in the future, as it would be a shame to not include them as series regulars after the Tournament of Power arc.

With all the great action and emotional moments, there was one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb. Super continues to fumble the idea that this tournament is a battle royale. Early on this week we see Goku get caught off guard, and of course Krillin was knocked out entirely while he was distracted. But then we also see countless scenes where people are able to stand, talk, or do nothing at all with no repercussions. Perhaps I am overestimating the battle prowess of the combatants, but when Goku is standing perfectly still, watching another fight, it seems like a perfect time to land an attack. Although it doesn’t ruin the tournament, I do find myself drawn out of my enjoyment just a bit each time something silly on screen happens that doesn’t line up with what a battle royale should be.

The Verdict

Episode 101 continues to showcase great battles and intense action as the Tournament of Power pushes forward. Some older heroes get moments to shine this week, but it’s the Saiyan women of Universe 6 that truly steal the show. With an epic battle for their lives and a heartfelt moment happening between them, their time on screen was some of the most enjoyable and rewarding to watch in recent Super arcs. It’s unfortunate that Super still has so many moments that don’t line up with the action of a true, chaotic battle royale, but with all the great moments happening on screen, it’s an easy thing to overlook.
