Dodgeball's ESPN8 'The Ocho' to Become Real for One Day

That's a bold strategy, Cotton.

It's been over a decade since the movie Dodgeball released, and it still holds a place in our collective pop-culture hearts. In an homage to the film, ESPN is turning ESPN8 "The Ocho" into an actual channel, albeit only for a day.

The sports broadcast giant is turning ESPNU, its channel normally focused on college athletics, into The Ocho on August 8.

It's not just a cosmetic change, either. ESPN is really leaning into the mythical sports channel, "bringing you the finest in seldom-seen sports," just like in the movie.

Among the alternative sports scheduled for 8/8 are the American Disc Golf Championship, the WFTDA Roller Derby Championships, the Firefighters World Challenge XXV, Kabaddi World Cup Final, Championship of Bags, Moxie Games, U.S. Open Ultimate Championship, and of course, Sky Zone Ultimate Trampoline Dodgeball.

If some of those events sound made-up, we promise you they are real. Originating in India, Kabaddi is described as a game in which one team's "raider" tags "as many of the opposing team’s players as possible," before returning to their half of the playfield "all while taking just a single breath."

All of the events have aired previously on ESPN, "with the exception of the Moxie Games." The Moxie Games is a combination of dodgeball, juggling, martial arts, volleyball, table tennis and soccer. Somehow. Look, you'll just have to watch because it doesn't seem like that could be anything less than incredible.
