Destiny 2 Preview: Exploring the European Dead Zone

There's definitely a ton of loot.

This is the first time we’ve been let loose to explore the European Dead Zone, and it’s a place you’ll want to know well during your Destiny 2 travels. Filled with fighting enemy factions, you’ll want to work with your fellow guardians to take back the space, solve its mysteries and fill your pockets with all the loot they can hold.

The European Dead Zone is home to your new ally Devrim Kay. He’s your sniper wielding point of contact, giving you intel during quests, and much sought after loot like unique armor sets acquired through legendary engrams. Earn these in exchange for reputation building items like planetary materials or EDZ tokens. Earn these through Adventure side-quests, Lost Sectors, Treasure Chests, Public Events or roaming world bosses. They’re all here for both story fans or collectors, but if you want to grind up those light levels quickly, the frequent public events are there for some big XP gains. Even after you’ve hit the level cap, you’re incentivized to keep playing as you’ll earn a Bright engram after you've refilled your XP bar. Exchange them on the farm for some coveted items which I’ll chat a bit more about near launch.

Lost Sectors, large caverns filled with enemies and rewards, can be found in abundance here. You’ll be led to them via markings that can be seen on your map or in the environment. This will prompt you to explore into the depths of the EDZ where you’ll sometimes be surprised to discover a labyrinth filled with stunning visuals, and of course coveted loot once the boss within is slain. Come back again to grab an EDZ token for Devrim if you feel like giving them another go.

Adventures are a small example of how the team is putting more story into the game. These are side-quests where you’ll get a bit more story about the location you’re exploring, and why you’re shooting monsters in the face. Once completed you’re again rewarded with loot. They’re fun to play with friends, but don’t expect any earth shattering revelations lore wise. That’s left mostly to the random random shards of the traveller, and devices you find in the wild. These will expand on the story in subtle ways, which turned finding each item into a special moment because I knew I was about to hear something interesting. Those story morsels only got more intriguing the more items I found.

There are even location based challenges, that give you a reward for completing specific tasks on each location as well as Flashpoints which will unlock end game tier rewards in the form of a Luminous Planetary Engram. Roaming bosses can also wander into your path during any of these encounters, and will drop a treasure chest at your feet once defeated giving you another chance at goodies. And of course, there are the new patrol missions to keep you or your team busy while showing you new areas of the map and rewarding you with glimmer and a token. There is rarely a dull moment on the EDZ because so much can be happening at any given second.

Overall, the common theme here is rewarding players in some fashion for progressing in Destiny 2. You'll lose track of time as you’ll find a random item teasing you with lore, or stumble upon a Lost Sector as you wait for a Public Event to begin. It’s a huge improvement, making it hard to be bored, and I can’t wait to see what’s planned for each destination after the campaign. I guess I’ll find out when Destiny 2 hits on September 6th.
