Young Justice fans rejoiced yesterday as it was announced that the beloved animated series is returning for a third season, several years after it was unceremoniously cancelled.
We don't know much about the new season yet, including when it'll premiere and where it will air, but there's still plenty of cause for excitement right now knowing these characters will be back.
As we wait for WB Animation to release more details about Young Justice's return, here are six things we hope to see in the new season - both offscreen and on.
The prospect of more Young Justice is certainly appealing, but it wouldn't mean much without the involvement of the original cast and crew. Producers Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman were crucial to the show's success. Separately, these two creators were responsible for some of the finest superhero cartoons ever made (with Vietti helming The Batman and Beware the Batman and Weisman overseeing The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles). Young Justice worked because of their creative fusion, and a Vietti and Weisman-less Season 3 simply wouldn't be the same.
Luckily, it doesn't sound like fans need to worry in that regard. The one concrete detail we do know about the new season is that both Vietti and Weisman are returning as producers. Hopefully they'll be joined by the rest of the show's writing staff, including Kevin Hopps, Andrew Robinson, Nicole Dubuc and Jon Weisman.
But what about the voice cast? Young Justice strong lineup of vocal talent was another reason the show stood out as much as it did. Whether it was Jesse McCartney's Robin/Nightwing, Jason Spisak's Kid Flash, Danica McKellar's Miss Martian or Khary Payton's Aqualad, the actors came to embody their core cast in a way not really seen since the days of Batman: The Animated Series - and that's to say nothing of inspired casting choices like Bruce Greenwood as Batman. Vietti and Weisman may be the single two most crucial pieces of the puzzle, but we hope the third season can reunite as much of the voice cast as possible.
The sting of Young Justice's cancellation was that much worse because the Season 2 finale set up such a great conflict for Season 3. The series wrapped with Vandal Savage traveling to Apokolips and meeting with his partner, Darkseid. The stage was set for this team of elite teen heroes to do battle with one of the greatest villains in the DC Universe. And then... nothing. Until now, we feared that ending would never be resolved. It was the was the most frustrating ending to a superhero cartoon since Wolverine and the X-Men teased an Age of Apocalypse-themed Season 2 that never materialized.
We doubt Wolverine and the X-Men fans will ever get the closure they crave, but the same doesn't have to be true for Young Justice lovers. The first order of business with Season 3 should be building on the Darkseid reveal. We want to see more of the New Gods, both good and evil. Maybe even with a couple New Gods joining the Young Justice ranks? All of this should fuel a gradual build-up to the ultimate showdown with the Lord of Apokolips. This is a villain who can take on the entire Justice league without breaking a sweat. Surely, there's no better test of the team's fighting strength.
With a Darkseid/Vandal Savage alliance as the central threat of Season 3, the real question will be how the show could top itself in a potential fourth season.
Young Justice: Season 2 made a number of significant changes to the show's status quo, including essentially doubling the size of the main cast. In addition to the core Season 1 lineup - Superboy, Robin, Miss Martian, Artemis, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Speedy and Zatanna - Season 2 added everyone from Batgirl to Wonder Girl to Impulse to Blue Beetle.
As great as it was seeing such a massive, diverse bunch of teen heroes in one place, at times we missed the smaller, more intimate roster of Season 1. We wouldn't mind seeing Season 3 reduce the cast a little and follow the first season's example. So much of the show hinges on the various interpersonal relationships between these hormonal teenage heroes, and a smaller cast gives the writers more time to develop those relationships.
That's not to say we want to see the show simply revert to the Season 1 cast. That's a little difficult considering all the changes that unfolded in Season 2 (particularly the death of Wally West in the finale). And we're very fond of the new additions to the lineup. Ideally the new team roster will include a healthy mixture of older and newer heroes, with a lot of emphasis on Bart Allen taking the place of the late Wally West and honoring the Kid Flash legacy.
Continue on for more of what we'd like to see when Young Justice returns.
