Supergirl: Jeremy Jordan on Guardian and Kevin Smith

Winn is keeping pretty busy these days.

Few characters have changed as much in the current season of Supergirl as Jeremy Jordan's Winn Schott. Winn has evolved from CatCo's resident IT guru to full-fledged DEO member. Now Winn is on the frontlines helping Supergirl and her cousin protect the world from all manner of alien and metahuman threats. And as recent episodes have shown, Winn also has a new side job helping James Olsen live out his dreams of being a superhero.

We had a chance to chat with Jordan over the phone this week and learn more about what this season holds in store for Win. Scroll down to learn about how next week's episode, "The Darkest Place," will complicate the Guardian storyline, whether the show will continue to focus on the Kara/Winn/James love triangle and what to expect when director Kevin Smith drops by to helm a Winn-centric episode in January.

IGN: As someone who’s been with the show from the start, how different has it been this season with the shift to The CW and filming in Vancouver?

Jordan: Yeah, it's been a bit of a shift. On top of that, my character is in a completely different place. It's been a pretty dramatic shift. It's been a bit of a challenge being so far away from all my friends and family. But The CW is a good fit for us and our show. I think it sort of made the show a little more comic book-y and a little more fun. They don't have to worry so much about the broad appeal. Not that it still doesn't have it, but when you're on CBS it becomes a lot more about, "How do we really target this giant audience?"

But we've been having fun while we're away from home. Being on set has been a lot a lot more fun. You go there to be with your friends; t doesn't feel like you're going to work. When you're living in the same place you're shooting, it's like, "Okay, I've gotta go to work and then I gotta go home to real life." But here we're in a new city, so going to work is where you know everybody. It's been fun in that aspect.

IGN: Like you mentioned, Winn’s role on the show has changed quite a bit this season. Are you happy with where he is now as an agent of the DEO?

Jordan: I think it's definitely a place where he fits in a lot better. He can really come out of his shell a lot more and use talents to their full ability. And it also allows him access to all these things he can nerd out about all day and learn about all these cool aliens. It gives him access to materials to build suits. I think he's kind of in fanboy heaven, to be honest.

IGN: Winn was locked in a love triangle with Kara and James in Season 1, but it seems like they’ve pretty much moved away from that element this year. Are we still going to see Winn’s feelings for Kara come into play, especially as he sees her growing closer to Mon-El?

Jordan: Yeah, I do think so. I mean, honestly, we never really saw Winn handle that whole situation, or them talk about it. They kind of talked about it and said "What are we going to do?" And then Winn didn't talk to her for a while and then they just kind of decided to shovel it under the rug. I was thinking maybe at the end of last season he was going to have to figure out how to reconcile his friendship with James with James dating Kara, but it didn't work out. And now Kara and Mon-El may become a thing. I can't imagine Winn's going to be able to keep it all packed down for too long.

It's going to come out in different ways. There was a dun relationship brewing there with Winn and Mon-El, though Mon-El fully took advantage of Winn, [laughs] so it might take a minute for that to fully blossom. But for now, he's got James and their Guardian thing. And I honestly think that might be a big reason why Winn is so gung-ho about working with James. He needs an outlet, something that doesn't involve her and can take him away from all that potential drama.

IGN: James’ transition to becoming Guardian really stems from his desire to stop being the sidekick and be a hero in his own right. Do you think Winn feels the same way on some level, or does he sympathize with that desire?

Jordan: I think Winn is conflicted about that. I think we wants to feel that way. He has the sort of internal need to make more of a difference. But at the same time, he's a very tractable person. He's constantly being pulled in the direction of, "How do I help my friends stay safe? How do I not get somebody killed, but then also get to fulfill this desire in both James and I to do something else on our own and not live in Kara's shadow?" So we'll see that struggle play out over the next couple episodes, for sure.

IGN: This week, Winn gave James a pretty stern warning about the dangers he’s opening himself up to by becoming Guardian. With James falling on the wrong side of the law in this next episode, is that kind of an “I told you so” moment for Winn?

Jordan: No, Winn knows that James isn't the one and that somebody's screwing with them. I think Winn's initial reaction is, "Okay, that's it. We're out. We're done. We've got to pull out and tell Kara and tell people, because otherwise you're going to be in jail and we're both screwed." It's less of a "I told you so," and more of an "Oh, crap, we're in over our heads."

IGN: It seems like Winn’s Guardian suit is very much a work in progress. Are we going to see him designing any major upgrades for James over the course of the season?

Jordan: [laughs] I can't imagine that Winn would not consider upgrades for the Guardian suit. But Winn did also promise to make Mon-El a suit, if that ever happens. I think that his suit-making days are still ahead of him.

IGN: In one of the episodes last season we met Winn’s father, Toyman, and learned more about his family and his background. Are there any big, Winn-focused episodes like that coming up this year?

Jordan: There are some episodes focused on Winn, but not so much his past or his family. At least not yet. I mean, I'd love to see that, but I don't know when or where that would happen. Winn's next really big episode is Episode 9, which is the one Kevin Smith directed. It's really fun, and Winn gets his first taste of action. We see that conflict of "Do I hide behind a computer or actually go out and make a difference?"

IGN: Kevin Smith is an interesting choice for the show for a number of reasons. What are your thoughts on that episode. Does it stand out from the rest, stylistically, or does it fit into the overall mold of the season?

Jordan: I haven't actually seen it yet, but yeah, I imagine it will look like another Supergirl episode. Kevin Smith was really fun and great to work with. He really lets you do your own thing and have a lot of fun with it. So if anything, it's going to feel a lot more fun and fresh and exciting. The actual episode is a pretty crazy one. I think it will stand out, but I can't say too much about it yet.
