Star Wars Rebels: "Imperial Super Commandos" Review

Fly Sabine, fly!

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Season 3 continued its strong run of episodes with “Imperial Super Commandos,” an installment that managed to further Rebels' storylines and characters while also touching upon important Star Wars history – both on and off-screen.

Fenn Rau was a cool character in his introduction in Season 2’s “The Protector of Concord Dawn,” so it was great to see him return here. He was a well done example of the honorable enemy, and opening the episode with Rau and Sabine playing the Star Wars equivalent of chess was a nice touch – both establishing them trying to figure each other out and the respect he was being given as a prisoner, which would help set up his eventual decision to help Sabine and Ezra.

Yes, Rau got his Han Solo moment, coming back to help after it seemed he’d fled the big fight – and even though it was obvious he would, it was still damn satisfying to see occur.

Of course, the episode’s big introduction were the title characters – a sect of Mandalorians who had pledged loyalty to the Empire, turning them into, essentially, badass Mandalorian Stormtroopers. The look – and, in a sense, the concept – of the Super Commando came from early concepts for The Empire Strikes Back and Ralph McQuarrie art that would eventually become a single character, Boba Fett. Dave Filoni and his collaborators have deftly incorporated unused McQuarrie concepts before, in both The Clone Wars and Rebels, but this was an especially cool one, tied into such an iconic character with Fett.

The episode’s centerpiece, as the Super Commandos pursued Sabine (now using a stolen jetpack!), Ezra and Chopper through the sky, was fantastic and one of the coolest action scenes yet for Rebels, jam-packed with exciting and visually notable moments.

Another amusing off-screen-fueled touch was having Rome stars Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson reunited as Mandalorian enemies Rau and Gar Saxon, with both giving strong performances here. Plus, Saxon revealing Sabine’s mother was now working for the Empire was a suitably impactful beat for Sabine – even as the question of just how much of a willing participant she is was brought up. Meanwhile, they still didn’t name Sabine’s mom, even as pretty much every Clone Wars fan assumes it’s Bo-Katan... Hopefully the next follow-up to the Mandalorian story being told here clears this up!

The Verdict

Though Gar Saxon sure liked to talk about having Chopper shot/destroyed without actually doing it, he and his fellow Imperial Super Commandos still made a very compelling entrance, in an episode that gave Sabine some awesome moments – and a jetpack that hopefully is repaired soon! Meanwhile, Fenn Rau made an appreciated return, with his decision to firmly become a Rebel another sign the Alliance is getting ever stronger.
