Columbia Pictures is rebooting the cult classic science fiction film, Starship Troopers.
Mark Swift and Damian Shannon will write the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The duo most recently worked on the upcoming Baywatch movie, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe, the producers behind the Total Recall remake, will produce the reboot.
The upcoming Starship Troopers won't be a remake of the original 1997 film, but will draw from the same source material, a 1959 sci-fi novel by Robert A. Heinlein, which tells the story of a war between alien bugs and mankind.
The original Starship Troopers stared Casper van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris and eventually spawned three direct-to-DVD movies, Hero of the Federation, Marauder, and Invasion. The latter released in 2012.
