Rogue One: New Look at and Info on the Shield Gate

Spoiler alert!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-producer John Swartz has shared a few new details about a heavily protect planet that's featured in the film, as well as the structure that surrounds it.

Warning: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story spoilers ahead.

In Rogue One, the tropical planet, known as Scarif, is home to a key military base of the Empire and its special weapons head Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelssohn). As such, the planet is protected by a massive force field and circular space station called the shield gate.

"You can see the blue sheen surrounding the entire planet. The shield gate is the security," Swartz told EW, noting that "as Imperial ships and cargo comes through, it punches a hole in the shield so they can pass."

Swartz explained that while Scarif isn't "necessarily" where the Death Star was constructed, it serves as the location where the Empire conducts much of its military "research, structural engineering, munitions and manufacturing."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16 in North America and December 15 in the UK. While you patiently wait for its release, check out this new TV spot focused on Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso and Diego Luna's Cassian Andor.
