Resident Evil 7 Expected to Sell 4 Million Copies At Launch

The company considers the game a "foundation title."

In a recent earnings report, Capcom announced the company is expecting to sell 4 million copies of Resident Evil 7 at launch. The game comes out on January 24 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

In an English Q&A released today (via GameSpot), Capcom elaborated on its projections for Resident Evil 7, saying it considers the game a "foundation title," and expects its lifetime sales to continue strongly thanks to the rise of digital distribution "producing revenue not limited to the next two fiscal years but into the long term as well."

For context, if Capcom's internal predictions are correct, this would make Resident Evil 7's launch close to Resident Evil 6's "disappointing" sales, which only moved 4.8 million units by the end of 2012. The game released in October of that year. On the flip side of that, time will tell if RE7 is able to pass the lifetime sales of Resident Evil 5, which was once named Capcom's best selling game, selling 6.5 million units between its 2009 launch and 2013.
