Peter Molyneux and 22cans’ latest game, The Trail is out now for Android devices, and has a listing up on the App Store.
It seems The Trail is a tale of exploration and empire-building. Players explore a lush countryside and go from a nobody to the leader of a town by collecting loot, crafting new gear, and trading/working with other players. It’s also free-to-download-and-play if you fancy it.
At time of writing, the iOS listing is viewable, but the game is not downloadable, at least in the UK - we'll update this story when it receives a full release.
“The Trail has been an exciting project for me” says the legendary British developer, Peter Molyneux. “It allowed me to get back to my roots as a game designer and put my passion for creating transformative play experiences into this unique and engaging game for today’s mobile audiences. My hope is that whether they have 5 minutes or 5 hours to play The Trail, they continue thinking about their journey long after the game screen has been closed.”
We first heard about The Trail back in September when the game soft-launched in the Philippines. Contrary to his old modus operandi, Molyneux hasn’t spoken about The Trail in any real detail, other than to mention his desire to incorporate leaderboards in a meaningful way, and his “excitement of discovery.”
"‘Let’s think about a very simple notion like highest score tables,” Molyneux said in December 2014, before The Trail was fully revealed. “They tell you how good you are at playing the game. We all like them. They’re part of Candy Crush. They’re part of Call of Duty.”
